Overview

There is nothing more important in our relationship with God than prayer and worship. Through prayer we establish a relationship with God, and through worship we recognize who he is. This 13-session course will help you sort through what it really means to speak to and honor God. Use it as a quarterly Sunday school curriculum for adults, in your small group, or for personal study.

Session One

Worshiping Well
In an age of choice, how can we best express our love to God?
Romans 12; Romans 1:18–25; various Psalms

Churches today wrestle with issues of musical style, personal expression, and theological preaching in worship services. But what should be at the core of worship, no matter which church we attend?

Session Two

Fear and Friendship: Two Sides of Worship
How do we balance intimacy and awe?
Psalm 95:1–7; Isaiah 6:1–8; John 9:35–41; Romans 12:1–3; Colossians 3:15–17; Revelation 7:9–17

How does worship connect with our personal walk with God? How do we balance intimacy and awe? These are the questions we'll be asking and discussing in this study.

Session Three

Worship Styles: How Does God Like His Praise?
Learning about God through our different approaches.
Genesis 1:11–12, 27–30, 2:18, 21–24; 2 Kings 5:1–14; Proverbs 5:18–20; Isaiah 24:4–7, 58:6–12; Ezekiel 36:24–30; 1 Corinthians 1:26–29

What can we learn about ourselves and about serving God by acknowledging differences in style? How can we be concerned about integrity and high quality without being snobs?

Session Four

Eyes Wide Open to God
To see God "high and lifted up," just open your eyes.
Ephesians 1:15-23; John 14:8-11

In this study, we will explore the concept of seeing God as found in several biblical texts, and we'll turn to the passage that gave expression to the prayer.

Session Five

Moving from Apathy to Joy
Finding inspiration from Søren Kierkegaard.
Genesis 22:1–19; Romans 4:16–21; 10:17; 1 Corinthians 2:1–5; 2 Corinthians 1:8–11; Hebrews 6:9–12; 11:1–2, 8–19

In this study, we will zero in on the issue of true faith and challenge the adequacy of mere resignation toward God's dealings in our lives.

Session Six

Intellect and Feeling: Do We Need Both?
How careful thinking and emotions work together.
Psalm 51:7–13; Matthew 19:1–9; Mark 12:28–31; 6:45–52; 8:14–21; Romans 1:21–32; 12:9–16; Philippians 4:4–9; Hebrews 3:7–13

Among the various camps of evangelical Christianity, intellect and feeling are sometimes regarded as competitors. This study will examine if there is a place for emotion in our faith.

Session Seven

Expectant Prayer
What should we expect from prayer, and what are our responsibilities?
Matthew 6:9–13; Luke 11:11; John 15:7–17; Romans 12:1–2; Galatians 5:22–23; 1 Thessalonians 5:16–22

What should we expect when we pray? What should we pray about? What responsibilities remain on us? This study examines these questions.

Session Eight

Remember What God Has Done
We must remember the past to move ahead to the future.
Genesis 41:50–52; Exodus 14:10–14; Deuteronomy 4:9–14; Psalm 25:7; Lamentations 3:19–24; Habakkuk 3:2;Hebrews 10:19–23; Revelation 21:1–4

Why should we rehash what has already happened? What should we recall about ourselves and about God? How can memories of the past spur us on to spiritual renewal in the present and hope for the future?

Session Nine

Time for God
Are we too busy?
Psalm 1:1–3; 19:14; 27:14; 42:1–5; 73:25; 119:10, 48; 104:34; 145:5; Hebrews 3:1; 12:2–3

Have we forgotten how to clear the clutter from our minds and focus singly on God? Perhaps it is time to learn this discipline anew.

Session Ten

Listening to God in Scripture
Avoid these common errors in studying God's Word.
Psalm 37:4; Jeremiah 1:5; Matthew 19:3–9; 22:23–32, 41–46; John 8:31–47; Acts 17:26–29; Ephesians 3:20; Hebrews 12:9.

How can Christians remain open to God's message while studying Scripture? Do topical studies really glean the truth? This study will challenge us to think about these issues.

Session Eleven

When God Says No
Making sense of unanswered prayer.
Psalm 8:3–4; Hebrews 12:9–11; Matthew 26:42; James 5:10–11

How do Christians reconcile pain and confusion about unanswered prayer with our belief in an all-powerful God of love?

Session Twelve

Trusting God When It Hurts
Learning from Job.
Job 1:6–12; 13:15; Daniel 10:2-5, 11–14; Romans 8:19; Ephesians 3:7–12; Philippians 1:20; Hebrews 12:4–13

Why do Christians experience hardship? Why does God permit, even encourage, Job-like tests of faith? Do our responses to these tests make a difference?

Session Thirteen

Does God Know Your Next Move?
God's freedom, our freedom, and spiritual confidencein a changing world.
Hebrews 4:13; Isaiah 45:21, 46:10–11; Genesis 6:5–6; 1 Samuel 15:11, 29; Isaiah 55:8–9

In recent years, the openness of God has been a hot topic in theological circles. John Sanders and Chris Hall explore these matters in the dialogue recorded in CHRISTIANITY TODAY.
