Overview

This 13-session course contains discussion guides on a variety of popular fantasy movies. This resource will help you think about these movies from a Christian perspective, and how they do—or do not—illustrate biblical principles. This quarterly pack can be used for a Sunday school class or small group, or to host a film festival.

Session 1

Big Fish
Big Fish takes us into the vivid imagination of Edward Bloom, who shares his life through captivating and far-fetched stories. This movie reminds us of the power of stories—to hide and to reveal, to distance ourselves from others, and to inspire people to greatness.

Session 2

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
This study guide will help you discuss some of the deeper themes of the movie. What does this film say about the struggle for virtue, the temptations of power, the providence of God, and the ennobling power of story?

Session 3

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
What does this film say about the relationships between magic and science, prophecy and free will, authority and rebellion, anger and mercy, and darkness and light?

Session 4

Signs
What does this film say about how God intervenes in human lives? How do characters approach the unexplainable? How does the movie use metaphor to depict God's relationship with humans during times of pain? How can we help strangers?

Session 5

Spider-Man 1 and 2
This study will look at both Spider-Man movies, explore what it means to be a hero, note how choices shape our character, and examine the responsibilities that come with the gift of power.

Session 6

The Star Wars Saga
This study guide will help you discuss some of these deeper themes, motifs, and messages of the Star Wars universe. What does the galaxy far, far away say about the allure of evil, the importance of faith, the path to redemption, and the need for community?

Session 7

The Village
This study guide will help you discuss the themes in The Village, an especially poignant film for the church community. What is the role of authority, and is pragmatism justified? How do people of principle interact with a corrupt world? Can we regain innocence in a sinful world? And, can love conquer all?

Session 8

Batman Begins
Batman Begins has been hailed as the high-water mark for films about superheroes. The film rewards adult fans by establishing without a doubt that superheroes are a contemporary mythology that thus fulfills the task of all mythologies: to define reality, to outline ethics, and to inspire nobility. This study looks at the movie's themes of justice, courage, and following our calling.

Session 9

X-Men
This study guide will help you discuss some of the questions raised by this film. How do we address prejudice and oppression? What role does tolerance play in a frightening world? What is the power of community in an individualized society?

Session 10

House of Flying Daggers
Tales of love span the history of storytelling, such as Abraham and Sarah, David and Bathsheba, Antony and Cleopatra, Heloise and Abelard, Arthur and Guinevere, Romeo and Juliet, and so many more. They are tales of confrontation and consequence, comprising the most basic human drama: the struggle between heart and mind. This study will explore the themes of love, courage, and loyalty in House of Flying Daggers?

Session 11

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe
Lewis's story is a tale rich with metaphors that reflect our sinful failures and God's endeavors to save us from the consequences. This study will explore the ways in which the adventures of the four Pevensie children in Narnia illustrate humankind's corruption and sinful behavior, the role of conscience, the power of trust, the value of forgiveness, and the way that Christ's sacrifice and resurrection liberate us from death's curse.

Session 12

Superman Returns
Superman Returns's director, Bryan Singer, in a Newsweek interview, said, "There's a very strong Christian allegory … particularly in our film, which is about saviors and sacrifice. I was very conscious of that. But [Siegel and Shuster] were born of immigrants; Superman is very much the ultimate immigrant. That's what I think it's really all about—being an outsider" ("A Flying Leap," by Sean Smith, July 10, 2006). This study guide will help you discuss these themes of saviors, sacrifice, and solitude that make Superman Returns more than just another superhero film.

Session 13

The Sixth Sense
There is a lot of confusion concerning the afterlife in popular culture. What does this film say about ghosts, mentorship, being different, and using our gifts? This discussion guide will help you examine these issues and discuss the movie from a biblical perspective.
