Darryl has led the same small group for a couple of years. The group had been growing in numbers, but in the past several months the group has plateaued and even declined with a couple of members switching to another group. The group also seems restless at times and is becoming a bit ingrown and protective. Darryl has come to the realization that the group needs to birth a new group and he even has an assistant leader who would be willing to lead another group, the only trouble is that Darryl has not breathed a word about "splitting" the group up to the rest of the group. He knows the idea will meet resistance, and he knows he should have been laying the ground work for this months ago. He needs to figure out what steps he should take and how much time he should give the group to work through this.
If you were Darryl, what would you do in this situation?
Your ResponsesWhen our group gets large in numbers we subdivide the group for discussion during the meeting. Let the other leader know that the discussion will be divided, tell the group ou will stay in here the other leader will move to another room to discuss. What this does is allow people to follow who they want to without making a conscious choice. After doing this for a few weeks comment on how great the discussion is within the small groups and let people see that by splitting the group more people can share and get the care they need. Also by forming natural following of each leader, people can see who they relate best with which will give a natural core group of people for the new group.
